Minions went from a Villain-Con trade convention for villains in Orlando to an Arthurian subplot in London, in which one of the Minions pulled out the Sword in the Stone, briefly becoming king of England. Both films play as if they were stitched together from every haphazard notion tossed out in an early brainstorming session, with no subsequent editing or refining. Like last year’s Minions, The Secret Life of Pets doesn’t so much follow a narrative arc as lurch from one half-baked idea to another. Alas, the folks at Illumination Entertainment, their debut effort Despicable Me aside, have so far shown no hint of aptitude in constructing a story. ![]() This being a feature film, a story of sorts is needed to sustain the 90-odd-minute running time. This style of cartoon animal comedy would sustain an animated short - one potentially more promising than the exhausted Minions short, Mower Minions, which plays before The Secret Life of Pets. This gag should have gone to a dog struggling with temptation is not a cat thing. It is unknown what happened to them prior to the events of the sequel.There’s Lake Bell as a laid-back, obese cat named Chloe, who calmly tells an upset Max, “I’m your friend, Max! And as your friend, I gotta tell you: I don’t care about you or your problems.” In another bit, Chloe gets into her owner’s fridge and struggles with the temptation to tear into a roast turkey, repeatedly turning away before yielding and devouring it. While Snowball is about to let Viper bite Max as recognition to a new recruit, some of the alley cats appear and Nitro tells Snowball that Max and Duke are actually domesticated. Later, Ozone is found by Tiberius and brought to atop of the Apartment Building to Gidget, which makes them know that Max is trapped in the sewers. However, Max and Duke are caught by Menard and his co-worker, D. Menard, chases after them, so the dogs and The Alley Cats runs away. At least, he is confused to see he is back, and then an Animal Control officer, J. Max is eventually thrown to a sofa, and he notices Duke runs to him. In the process, a small kitten slices Max's collar off and Ozone gets his collar as well. Max tries to escape by rolling away in a trash can, but he gets accidentally thrown around between clotheslines by numerous cats. One by one they appear, he soon dashes away and excuses that he remembers something else, leaving Max alone in the alley. But after Ozone robs his collar passing to Nitro and other cats appears Duke runs away. At first, Duke acts that he doesn't afraid at all. ![]() Little does he knows that the alley is where Ozone and his minions live, Ozone picks up and throws down Max from the trash bin and then threatens the two dogs. Because Max tries to frame Duke to drive him out and treats him badly, Duke bites Max by leash and throws him into a trash cart of the alley. ![]()
